Jin Jun Mei

Background Description

This tea is known as Jin Jun Mei (Beautiful Golden Eyebrow) with the best stuff being produced almost exclusively in a small village near the Wuyi Mountain national park in South East China. Often considered a high class tea that’s gifted to government officials, we managed to get our hands on a small batch.

Jin Jun Mei (金骏眉), often called "Golden Eyebrow" tea, is a relatively recent yet renowned addition to the world of Chinese teas, specifically black teas. Created in 2005, it originates from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, China, a region famous for its rich tea heritage and distinct terroir. The tea was developed by tea master Liang Junde and his team at the Wuyi Zheng Shan Tea Company, as a premium offshoot of Lapsang Souchong, another celebrated tea from the Wuyi region.

Unlike traditional Lapsang Souchong, which uses larger leaves and has a distinct smoky flavor, Jin Jun Mei is crafted exclusively from young tea buds, carefully handpicked from wild tea bushes that grow in the high-altitude, mist-laden mountains. These buds are gathered during the early spring season, when they are most tender and flavorful. This labor-intensive process, combined with the use of premium buds, makes Jin Jun Mei a highly prized and costly tea.

Jin Jun Mei is unique in that it undergoes a meticulous oxidation process, which allows the leaves to develop a beautiful golden hue. The result is a tea with a smooth, full-bodied flavor, often described as having notes of honey, chocolate, and dried fruit, with a naturally sweet and lingering aftertaste. The tea's name reflects this aesthetic, as “Jin” means "gold," and “Jun Mei” translates to "beautiful eyebrows," alluding to the golden, curved appearance of the tea leaves.

Since its introduction, Jin Jun Mei has gained immense popularity, both within China and internationally. It has come to symbolize the pinnacle of black tea craftsmanship, with each batch capturing the unique qualities of the Wuyi Mountains’ soil, climate, and traditional tea-making techniques. Its status as a premium tea has made it a favorite among tea connoisseurs, and it continues to be celebrated for its refined flavor profile and luxurious character.
